This piano was designed by Steinway in 1876 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It embodies state of the art materials and techniques of the time. It was a major step in Steinway’s path to dominance in the world of concert pianos. This piano has all the original, highly figured rosewood veneer, ornate case parts, and ivory key tops. The acoustical and action parts have been replaced: soundboard, pinblock, strings, tuning pins, repetitions, shanks, hammers, back checks, etc.
It plays well and has a big dynamic range. The tone quality is characteristic of the time, lighter than in the modern Steinway concert grands -- but very colorful. It is suitable for home use and chamber music recitals. Clearly its main attraction is the elaborate case and its historical importance. It’s a very rare piano in superb condition.
