About Flynn Pianos, LLC
Terry Flynn has been tuning and repairing pianos since the early 1970s. He learned the basics (from Joseph Blatt, Norwalk, CT) while working as a performing musician, songwriter and music teacher. In 1980 he received a BA (Summa Cum Laude) in Music from Western CT State University. In the mid 1980s, Terry quit public performance, and worked from his home in Georgetown, CT, giving music lessons and repairing piano actions.
During this time he also earned an MA in Political Economy at the New School for Social Research and began lecturing part-time in the Humanities and Social Science at WCSU. Concurrently he received invaluable lessons in piano repair from his friend and neighbor, the late Frank Dillingham (Redding, CT). Terry also became friends with Frank’s apprentice, Kim Muller of Germany. Kim subsequently returned to Germany for more training (earning the advanced degree of Klavierbaumeister) and to work for Steinway in Hamburg and as a concert tuner/technician in Berlin.
In the late 1980s, Terry gradually passed his piano & guitar students on to his wife, Gwen Glasser, to concentrate on his piano work and lecturing. In 1995 Terry & Gwen moved to their present home in New Fairfield, CT, (just north of Danbury) where Terry has a workshop and Gwen a teaching studio (guitar, piano, and violin/fiddle).
In 1997 did his first job in the Berkshires, restoring the action on the Steinway concert piano in Kellogg Hall at Simon’s Rock College in Great Barrington. This led to an increasing amount of work over the years, including restorations and sales to homes and performance spaces (E.g. Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Berkshire School, The Colonial Theater, et al.)
Around 2000 when Kim left Steinway and became an independent technician and consultant, he & Terry proceeded to work together on the restoration and sale of Steinway grand pianos in CT & MA. They worked with subcontractors (A.C. Pianocraft, Craftsman Piano, Klavierhaus) for belly work (soundboards, pin blocks, stringing) and refinishing, while Kim and Terry did the actions and follow-up service. From 2005-7 they displayed their work in South Egremont, MA at Beethoven House Music until it became online only in 2008.
In 2008 most of the inventory of Flynn Pianos was combined with that of Craftsman Piano in Yonkers, NY, the primary subcontractor. The majority of our piano tuning customers in lower Fairfield County and in Westchester are now being served by Jeff Baker of Age of Elegance Pianos who has become our primary piano mover, as well.
